How to Get Vaseline Out of Upholstery

Vaseline has various medicinal and cosmetic uses but if spilled or smeared on upholstery, a greasy, stubborn stain will often result. Vaseline is composed of oil-like compounds, so simply removing it with water will not work, since oil and water do not mix. To eliminate Vaseline stains on upholstery, use dry cleaning solvent and a few drops of neutral laundry detergent to effectively clean the stain.

Paper towels
Plastic spatula
Drinking glass
1 teaspoon neutral laundry detergent
Towels
2 spray bottles
Rubbing alcohol
Dry cleaning solvent
Hydrogen peroxide

Instructions

  Wipe Vaseline with a paper towel if the stain is fresh. For dried Vaseline, use a plastic spatula to gently scrape the stain off the upholstery.

  Fill a drinking glass with lukewarm water and 1 teaspoon of neutral laundry detergent. Dip a towel in the detergent solution and blot the Vaseline stain with it.

  Fill a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol or dry-cleaning solvent and spray the stain several times until the upholstery is thoroughly wet. Blot the stain with a towel.

  Place a towel or a stack of paper towels on the Vaseline stain. Hold the towels down with a heavy object, such as a book, and wait for the spot to dry. If the stain is still visible, dab hydrogen peroxide on the area. Wait one hour, and then blot the area dry with a towel.
