How do I Remove Smoke Odor From a Microwave?

Burning popcorn in your microwave could do more than just delay movie night. Heavy smoke odors can permeate the plastic inside a microwave, leading to a lingering smell of smoke.
  1. Light Odor

    • If the smoke odor inside your microwave is light, you can place a bowl of water with three or four lemons slices floating in it in the microwave. Cook the water on high for 1 minute. You also can place a bowl of vanilla extract in the microwave, cook it on high for 30 seconds, then let it sit for 12 hours. After, wipe down the microwave and the smell will be gone, according to "Talking Dirty with the Queen of Clean."

    Heavy Odor

    • For a persistent smoke odor, create a solution of 1 qt. water, 2 tbsp. detergent and 1/4 cup chlorine bleach. Wipe down the interior of your microwave with the solution, including the door, tray and gaskets. If the smell still lingers, wipe down the interior with water and baking soda, then rinse it clean with water, according to Utah State University.

    Considerations

    • Burning food in your microwave can lead to an odor of smoke. If food splatters during cooking and coats the side of your microwave, it can burn, increasing your risk of a smoke smell. Wipe down the interior of the microwave after spills to stop the smell of smoke from returning.
