How to Remove a Microwave From a Wall Bracket

Many space saving microwave ovens are mounted by brackets on the wall. This keeps them up and off the countertop, giving you more room in the kitchen. One of the most popular wall-mounted microwaves are those installed over a range. Some of these over-the-range microwaves can also sometimes function as vent hoods by way of built-in exhaust fans that suck up cooking vapors and channel them outside.

  Unplug the microwave from the power outlet. In most installations, the socket for the microwave will be mounted in a cabinet above where the microwave is installed.

  Disconnect any venting from the microwave, if present. The venting connects the microwave to the exhaust vent. The vent is usually connected to the top of the microwave and will lead back to an exterior wall. The vents may be held together with duct tape or clamps. Remove any fasteners before pulling the vent pieces apart.

  Have an assistant hold the oven in place from below.

  Inspect the wall bracket holding the microwave in place. Some microwaves will have screws securing the sides of the microwave to the bracket. Remove these, if present.

  Look for the screws holding the top of the microwave in place. These will usually be visible in the bottom of the cabinet above the microwave. Unscrew these with a screwdriver.

  Lower the microwave by its front, with help from your assistant. As he does lowers it, feed the cord for the microwave through the utility hole in the cabinet or mounting surface.

  Slowly pull the microwave off the wall mounting bracket, once it has been lowered to about a 45-degree angle.
