How to Remove the Top Rack on a KitchenAid Dishwasher

Removing the top rack in your dishwasher is necessary if you're washing over-sized pots and pans in the lower rack. Some larger pots extend past the bottom of the top rack. It is also necessary to temporarily remove the top rack when making repairs to the upper spray arm. Removing the top rack on a KitchenAid dishwasher is simpler than for most brands. Instead of a removable track end cap, KitchenAid uses a track stop on the side of the sliding rails.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your KitchenAid dishwasher door and fully extend the top rack. The top rack will "lock" into position once fully extended. Remove any dishes in the top rack and set them aside.

    • 2

Pull the front lock cover on each track stop away from the rack with your thumb. The track stops are the plastic blocks on the outside of each track rail. The track stop unlocks as you open the covers.

    • 3

Grab the side of the top rack and pull it forward, slightly tilting the front up to disengage the first set of rack wheels from the track. Continue pulling until the rear wheels are free from the track and the top rack is completely out of the dishwasher.

    • 4

Push the front lock covers toward the track rails then push the rails into the dishwasher once you remove the top rack. This prevents accidentally bumping into and damaging the track rails.
