How to Remove the Flywheel on a Stihl 029

When you need to rebuild and overhaul the engine on your Stihl 029 chain saw to get it in running condition again, you need to know the proper procedure for disassembling the engine so you don't break it for reassembling later. A key component of the Stihl 029 chain saw engine is the flywheel as it rotates the piston in the engine of the chainsaw. You need an assistant and a couple of special tools to properly remove the flywheel

Things You'll Need

  • Torx head screwdriver
  • Socket ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Flywheel holder

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the flywheel cover on the side of the engine with the chain saw model number written on it.

    • 2

Unscrew the six torx screws holding the cover over the flywheel with the torx head screwdriver.

    • 3

Fit the flywheel holder on the flywheel fins. Have your assistant unscrew the flywheel nut with the proper sized socket while you firmly hold the flywheel holder to prevent it from turning.

    • 4

Fit the three-arm gear puller arms under the outer edges of the flywheel.

    • 5

Tighten the center pushing bolt of the puller with the proper sized socket. The downward pressure of the bolt on the center of the flywheel will eventually pop the flywheel free.

    • 6

Pull the flywheel off the engine and grab the flywheel key on the crankshaft under the flywheel. Place them both in a safe place.
