How to Remove the Flywheel From a Mower Engine

With the help of inertia, a flywheel moderates fluctuating speed in various types of machinery. In a lawnmower, the flywheel is located in the center of the engine. A broken or damaged flywheel needs to be removed and replaced; otherwise the lawnmower will start and run very roughly, or not at all, by pulling the string out of your hands when you try to start the mower.

Remove the lawnmower engine cover. To do this, you will need to use a socket wrench to remove the bolts on the top and on the side of the cover. The typical size bolt is 5/16, but if your mower's bolts are bigger or smaller, adjust the size of the socket wrench accordingly.

Remove the center bolt in the engine with a breaker bar and set it aside.

Insert a screwdriver next to the magnet side of the flywheel and tap the opposite side of the flywheel with the hammer. As you tap, you should be able to jimmy the flywheel up slightly with the screwdriver. After tapping a few more seconds, put the tools down and pull the flywheel up and out of the engine.
