How to Remove the Flywheel on a 10 HP Tecumseh Engine

The 10 horsepower Tecumseh engine is a small engine used in tillers, chippers and similar yard maintenance machines. The flywheel of the Tecumseh engine may need to be removed entirely in order to access the clutch shaft or governor for troubleshooting and repair purposes, depending on your situation. Fortunately, you can remove the Tecumseh engine's flywheel yourself no matter your level of experience with engine part removal. Calling a repair person won't be necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Power off the machine and allow the 10 HP Tecumseh engine time to cool.

    • 2

Find the circular flywheel piece on the top of the Tecumseh engine assembly. This piece should be immediately recognizable due to its shape. It has an iron shroud, or cover, extended over it.

    • 3

Remove the bolts holding the Tecumseh engine's shroud over the flywheel. Use a socket wrench to loosen and take out each bolt, then slide the cover off.

    • 4

Locate the center bolt on the exposed Tecumseh flywheel. Remove it with your socket wrench.

    • 5

Position a flywheel pulley over the top of the Tecumseh's exposed flywheel. Lower the pulley's two arms over the sides of the 10 HP engine's flywheel.

    • 6

Tighten the center bolt on the flywheel pulley until the Tecumseh engine's flywheel pops free due to the pressure created. You may need to tighten the bolt and leave it tightened for several hours before the flywheel comes free.
