How to Adjust the Belt on a Snowblower

If you are having a problem with your snowblower, you may need to adjust the belts in order to restore power to the unit. The auger belt is the most important belt on the blower. This controls the amount of power going through the blower's hoses. Adjusting this belt should get your blower back up and running.

Things You'll Need

  • Siphon hose
  • New belt (if needed)

Instructions

    • 1

Use a siphon hose to remove any gas in the blower gas tank. Remove the spark plug wire if you have an electric blower.

    • 2

Press down on the plastic tabs to release the belt cover on the blower's engine. Turn the blower's face upward so it is resting on the auger assembly. The auger assembly is the metal piece that the belt is resting on.

    • 3

Remove the spring connecting the transmission to the frame bolt on the engine with your hands. The transmission is on the left side of the engine. The spring is in the middle of the transmission and the frame bolt. The frame bolt screws into the engine frame.

    • 4

Manually remove the transmission pulley from the unit. The transmission pulley is on the left side of the engine. This will come loose easily since the spring has been removed. Once the transmission pulley is out of the unit, the belt will be loose enough to adjust on the drive pulley. The drive pulley has a groove and comes off of the engine.

    • 5

Adjust the belt so it is resting on the drive pulley groove. Pull the belt a little bit to make sure that it is secure. Look over the belt for any wear and tear. Replace the belt if needed. Put the transmission pulley back into the unit.

Reconnect the spring to the transmission bolt on the engine frame and then replace the belt cover on the engine. Return fuel to the blower and turn it on to test the power.
