How to Eliminate Cigarette Smoke From Walls

Nonsmokers find cigarette smoke odors unpleasant, but smokers become accustomed to the smell. When smokers smoke indoors, cigarette odors permeate walls while the smoke leaves a yellow stain on paint. If you recently moved into a smoker’s previous residence, try to remove the odors and stains with household products and commercial cleaners. If simple cleaning won’t remove the smoke, you will need to have the walls repainted.

  • Bowls
  • All-purpose cleaner

Instructions

    • 1

Set out bowls of white vinegar or ammonia where children and pets can’t reach them. Leave the bowls overnight to absorb odors.

    • 2

Spray all-purpose cleaner or white vinegar on the walls, or apply a liquid cleaner with a sponge. Scrub the walls to remove yellow smoke stains. If the stains and odors remain after a thorough cleaning, you must repaint the walls.

    • 3

Sand the walls with 100-grit sandpaper in preparation for painting.

    • 4

Brush sealant on the walls to seal in any lingering cigarette odors. Allow the sealant to dry before you proceed.

    • 5

Prime and paint the walls to eliminate the smoke odor.
