How to Eliminate Cigarette Odor From Upholstery

You may wonder where cigarette smoke goes as you watch it drift away and seemingly dissipate into the air. Settling on any nearby surface, cigarette smoke remains in the form of residue on your furniture and other objects, perpetuating the odor until it is finally cleaned. Removing cigarette odor from upholstery is important not only to eliminate this stale unpleasant smell, but for health reasons as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the upholstered furniture outside to air out in the sunshine. If the weather isn't accommodating, set the furniture in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place to air out for 2 to 3 hours.

    • 2

Use a hand-held vacuum cleaner or the brush attachment of a regular vacuum cleaner and clean the furniture thoroughly. This helps to eliminate dust and leftover metals from the smoke. Remove the pillows and cushions and vacuum underneath them.

    • 3

Wipe down the furniture with an upholstery cleaner. Follow any specific manufacturer's instructions for the product carefully.

    • 4

Mix together water and white vinegar equally and dampen a cloth with it to "rinse" the upholstery using a clean cloth. Wring out the cloth well to avoid soaking the furniture, which would make it harder to dry later. White vinegar is effective for cleaning away soapy residue as well as freshening fabric.

    • 5

Set the cushions and pillows aside and leave the furniture to air dry for several hours.

    • 6

Pour baking soda over the upholstered furniture and cushions creating a thin layer.

    • 7

Leave the baking soda on the upholstery for 24 to 48 hours.

    • 8

Vacuum the upholstery to remove the baking soda.
