How to Transport Crystal Chandeliers

Crystal chandeliers are attractive lighting options that add an element of sophistication to any room. Because of their cost, many homeowners opt to take chandeliers with them when they move. Transporting a crystal chandelier to a new location must be done carefully because the components are extremely fragile. With the proper packing technique, however, the chandelier will be just as safe as when it was hanging on the ceiling.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electricity to the room where the chandelier is located and then place a ladder underneath it. Climb up onto the ladder and remove any of the glass components that are simply hanging on the frame.

    • 2

Wrap up all of the removed pieces using newspaper and place them into large plastic storage bags. Leave air in the bags before sealing them up to add additional cushioning.

    • 3

Climb back up the ladder and locate the center hook on the chandelier where the cord extends into the ceiling. Grasp the hook and turn it counterclockwise until it comes out of the ceiling. Remove the screws in the outlet box inside the ceiling so that you can access the wiring.

    • 4

Pull the base of the chandelier down and examine the wiring. Unscrew each of the plastic wire connector caps to disconnect the black and white wires from those in the ceiling. Then look for a copper or green colored wire and disconnect it from the outlet box in the ceiling.

    • 5

Lower the chandelier gently to the floor. Have another person hold open a large garbage bag while you lift and then lower the chandelier into it. Fill the bag with packing peanuts until the chandelier is completely surrounded by cushioning. Tie the top of the bag in a knot, with the chandelier cord extending out of the top.

    • 6

Remove the top from a wooden packing crate, which are available from any moving company. Insert the bag with the chandelier into the center of the crate. Nail a wooden board across the top of the crate opening using a hammer. Wrap the cord of the chandelier around the board and secure it with duct tape. The bag should not touch the bottom of the crate when properly suspended.

    • 7

Fill the remainder of the box with additional peanuts until it is flush with the top of the box. Place the lid on the crate and nail it shut with a hammer. Write the words fragile on the outside of the box using permanent marker.

    • 8

Lift the crate with the help of another person and place it into a moving truck. Place the box in a location where it will not slide. Drive the truck to the new location and unpack it by reversing the steps taken to pack it.
