How to Repaint Chandeliers

Chandeliers are an opportunity to increase drama and inject a dose of personal style into your home. Fortunately, chandeliers with high drama and style do not have to come with a high price tag. Spend some time in local antique shops, in secondhand stores and even at yard sales for chandeliers with a great shape for an affordable price. Once it's updated with a few coats of paint in a bold, modern color, you will have a one-of-a-kind chandelier that only looks expensive.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe away any dust from the chandelier with a microfiber dusting cloth. Follow up with a household cleaner to remove any residues that will prevent paint from adhering to the surface. Allow the chandelier to dry completely.

    • 2

Suspend the chandelier in the center of a well-ventilated area so that all areas of the chandelier are accessible for painting.

    • 3

Remove any parts that are not being painted such as lightbulbs, crystals, beaded chains and, if possible, candlestick covers. If it is not possible to remove the candlestick holders, cover them with aluminum foil that is secured at the base of the holder with painter’s tape.

    • 4

Spray the chandelier with several very thin coats of spray paint. To avoid drips, keep the can moving as you rotate around the chandelier. Allow each coat to dry for about 30 minutes before reapplication.

    • 5

Allow the chandelier, once completely painted, to dry for 24 to 36 hours before reassembly and use.
