How to Paint Colorful Chandeliers

Whether you want to add a whimsical touch to a bedroom or bathroom, or just want to update your dining room decor, painting a metal or brass chandelier in a bright, colorful shade is a quick and inexpensive project. While painting the chandelier white or silver keeps the look clean and modern, choosing a bold shade of blue, green or pink instead adds an unexpected pop of color to the room. Or, try a deep shade of purple or red to add drama and interest. Experiment with different colors until you find one that you like; if you hate the color, or want to change your decor, a can of spray paint is all it takes to update the look.

Instructions

    • 1

Take apart the chandelier, removing light bulbs, shades, crystals and any other removable parts. Use a damp rag to clean the part that you plan to paint, and allow it to dry. Place the chandelier on a drop cloth.

    • 2

Cover the parts of the chandelier that you cannot remove, and you do not want to paint, with painter’s tape. These parts include the sockets, plastic pieces that do not come off and the cord.

    • 3

Apply a layer of spray metal primer to the metal parts. Allow it to dry.

    • 4

Paint the chandelier with spray paint in your desired color. Apply several thin coats instead of one thick coat, allowing each coat to dry before adding another.

    • 5

Reassemble the chandelier. Replace the old bulb shades with new ones that coordinate with the new paint color, if necessary.
