How to Hang a Microwave From a Countertop

A microwave oven hanging from a countertop is convenient because it is easier to reach than one hanging over a stove. A front-vented microwave oven is most appropriate for hanging under a countertop since extra space and vents aren't needed for back ventilation. A wall bracket and countertop bolts hold the microwave securely in place under the countertop.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the levelness of the underside of the countertop with a level. Drill two guide holes for a wood shim if the countertop underside is not level. Screw a wood shim into the underside of the countertop with a screwdriver to make the mounting surface level.

Tape the top cabinet template that comes with your microwave on the underside of the countertop. Drill the guide holes for the mounting bolts where indicated on the template.

    • 3

Turn on a stud finder. Slide it over the wall on which the microwave will be mounted. The word "Stud" will appear on the display when the first stud is located. The word "Center" will appear when the middle of the stud is located. Continue sliding the finder across the wall to locate the second stud.

Tape the wall mounting template between the two wall studs. Drill guide holes through the studs where indicated on the template. Screw the wall mounting bracket into the two wall studs with a screwdriver. Lock the bottom of the microwave into place on the lower lip of the mounting bracket. Thread the electrical plug down to the wall electrical socket. Lock the top of the microwave into place on the upper lip of the mounting bracket.

Put the mounting bolts into their guide holes from the top of the countertop and through the top tabs of the microwave. Thread the nuts onto the bolts on the underside of the countertop, and tighten them with a wrench. Hide the hardware on the surface of the countertop with a counter runner or a dish drainer mat.
