How to Hang a Microwave Oven From the Ceiling

Hanging a microwave oven from a ceiling is an installation option if you do not have upper cabinets from which to suspend it. A ceiling-hung microwave might work well over a kitchen island in the middle of a room or over a side bar where there are no cabinets. You will need a microwave oven that vents from the front if there is no wall available on which to mount the microwave oven. A front-venting microwave should have a charcoal filter to prevent cooking odors from infiltrating the kitchen.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the microwave oven with a measuring tape. Set up a step ladder in the area where you want to hang the microwave oven. Climb the ladder and scan a ceiling area the same width as the microwave with a stud finder to locate the nearest ceiling joists. Watch the stud finder screen for flashing lights or the word "stud" to indicate the joist locations. Mark the ceiling joist locations.

    • 2

Tape the top-mount microwave cabinet template over the marked ceiling joist area. Put on a pair of safety glasses. Drill guide holes for the expansion anchors where indicated on the template. Remove the template from the ceiling. Pull the screws from the expansion anchors. Tap the anchors into the guide holes with a hammer.

    • 3

Set up another step ladder so a second person can help lift the microwave oven into place. Thread the expansion anchor screws through the top tabs on the microwave oven. Lift the oven into place.

Put the screws into the expansion anchors. Expand the anchors by tightening the screws with a screwdriver. Do not overtighten the screws. Slowly let go of the microwave oven.

Tack the microwave oven cord onto the wall and ceiling with a staple gun. Ensure that you do not pierce the cord with the staples. Plug the microwave into an electrical outlet.
