Installation Instructions for a Hunter Grand Lodge Fan

Hunter Grand Lodge ceiling fans cool the air in summer and help drive warm air trapped near the ceiling downward in the winter. A Hunter ceiling fan is Energy Star compliant and costs pennies a day to operate. If you have carpentry and electrical skills, you can install a Hunter Grand Lodge fan in your home. Because the fan weighs close to 40 pounds, you must be able to lift that much weight or have someone to help you with the installation. You must also be able to climb up on a ladder.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Fan Mounting Site

    • 1

Choose the spot where you plan to install the Hunter fan. The fan must be at least 7 feet above the floor. Allow 1 foot of space between the fan's blades and the ceiling. There must be 30 inches of clearance all around the fan's circumference.

    • 2

Use a stud finder to locate the ceiling joist or support brace nearest the spot you chose. The joist or brace must be able to support the full weight of the fan.

    • 3

Cut a 4-inch hole in the ceiling with a hole saw in the location you chose. Nail a 2-inch by 4-inch board between the joists for a brace if one doesn't currently exist.

    • 4

Attach an outlet box to the support brace with screws. Allow the box to sit inside the ceiling at least 1/16 inch.

    • 5

Turn off the circuit breakers to the electrical line you plan to use for the fan. Connect the wiring to the electrical supply line. Run the electrical line through the outlet box with at least 6 inches of wiring to spare. If you aren't comfortable doing the wiring for the fan, hire an electrician.

    • 6

Skip this section if you already have an outlet box in place and if there is adequate support in place for a fan.

    Hang the Fan

    • 7

Drill two pilot holes with the 9/64-inch drill bit through two of the holes on the outside of the outlet box. Run the electrical supply line through the center of the fan's ceiling plate. Set the noise reducers in place between the ceiling plate and the outlet box. Slide a flat washer over each of the 3-inch wood screws that came with the fan. Attach the ceiling plate to the support brace or ceiling joist with the screws. You now have a cover over the outlet box.

    • 8

Assemble the fan's hanging assembly. Put the downrod through the canopy and canopy trim ring. Push the fan's wires through the downrod.

    • 9

Locate the thin wire cable attached to the hanging assembly. Run the cable up through the ceiling plate and wrap it around the ceiling brace. Secure the small loop on the end of the cable with a small screw set into the ceiling brace. This gives your fan additional support.

    • 10

Examine the jumper settings on the fan. Make sure they match the jumper settings on the fan's remote. If the settings don't match, change them so that they do by adjusting the switches with a pair of tweezers. In most cases, you can skip this step.

    • 11

Connect the green ground wires for the fan and the electrical supply with a wire nut. Next, match the white wires and then the black wires. Finally, connect the black/white wires. Secure each connection with a wire nut. Push the excess wiring back though the ceiling plate. Extend the small white wire to the edge of the ceiling plate. This is the remote's antenna wire; it needs to be clear.

    • 12

Attach the canopy to the ceiling plate by aligning the slots and twisting them until they click into place.

    • 13

Put the blades and blade attachments together with the screws that came with the fan. Attach the blade assembly to the canopy.

    • 14

Set the light fixture housing in place and twist it to secure its location. Connect the fan's light to the rest of the fan with the small plug connector wire. Put the glass shade in place on the fan and install light bulbs.

    • 15

Put batteries in the remote control for the fan. Turn the electrical power on to the fan to complete the installation.
