Installation Directions for a Ceiling Fan

A ceiling fan is a mounted electrical appliance usually installed where a light fixture would typically be placed. Air flow from the fan can be controlled by changing the speed or direction of the ceiling fan blades, which usually have a diameter between 40 and 60 inches. Installation of a ceiling fan is a little more involved than installing a light fixture, but it is still within the scope of most DIY homeowner's abilities.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the electrical box that your fan will be attached to is able to support the weight of the ceiling fan. If you are not sure about your electrical box, have an electrician check it out before you install your fan.

    • 2

Turn off the power to the electrical circuit the fan will be connected to at the main breaker box. Test the wires from the electrical box in the ceiling with a no-touch electrical tester to ensure the current has been disabled on the correct circuit before starting fan installation.

    • 3

Attach the ceiling fan's mounting bracket to the electrical box with the screws that came with the box. Route the electrical wires from the box through the center hole of the mounting bracket and tighten the screws with a Philips screwdriver.

    • 4

Fish the wires from the fan motor assembly through the down rod and ceiling trim escutcheon. Push the down rod into the fitting at the top of the motor assembly. Push the retaining pin through the hole in the motor fitting and through the down rod to attach the down rod to the motor. Clip the cotter pin to the end of the retaining pin to secure the pin. (Note: skip this step if attaching the fan directly to the ceiling without a down rod)

    • 5

Raise the down rod and/or the motor assembly to the mounting bracket on the ceiling. Place the ball of the down rod into the slot in the bracket to support the motor assembly, or if not using a down rod, support the motor assembly close enough to the mounting bracket to connect the wiring. (Note: Have a helper hold the motor up for you or suspend it from the mounting bracket with sturdy wire while you complete the electrical connections.)

    • 6

Twist together the white wire from the motor and the white wire from the electrical box with pliers. Twist a wire nut onto the wires in a clockwise direction to secure. Connect the black wire from the motor and the black wire from the electrical box in the same manner. Attach the bare ground wire from the electrical box to the green ground screw on the mounting bracket. Tighten the screw with a Philips screwdriver.

    • 7

Line up the mounting holes in the top of the fan motor or the down rod assembly to the mounting holes in the ceiling bracket. Tighten the screws in the bracket with a Philips screwdriver.

Attach the fan blades to the fan blade brackets with a Philips screwdriver and the screws provided. Attach the fan-blade brackets to the mounting holes on the bottom of the motor assembly. Tighten the retaining screws with a Philips screwdriver. Turn the circuit breaker on at the main breaker box.
