How to Install Window Air

A window air conditioning unit provides a cost-effective alternative to expensive central air. With a window air conditioner, you can simply put it in your window when the hot days of summer begin, then pull it back out and store it when the cooler fall temperatures arrive. But as with any home appliance, it is important to install your window air conditioner properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the window where the air conditioner is to be installed. Remove any existing screens from the window.

    • 2

Hold the air conditioner so that the stabilizing bar at the front of the unit is just in front of where the window frame will be when the window is lowered. That bar should be in front of the window, inside the house.

    • 3

Ask a friend to hold the other side of the air conditioner -- the part that sticks out of the window and extends outside the house. You may be able to install a small window air conditioner on your own, but it helps to have two people when installing a large window unit.

    • 4

Lower the window down onto the top of the air conditioner. The window should fit snugly against the top of the air conditioner and hold it in place.

    • 5

Lift the window slightly, then pull out the sides of the air conditioner until they are snug against the sides of the window. Check the sides of the air conditioner for any tears, and use duct tape or sealing tape to patch any holes you find.

    • 6

Lower the window onto the air conditioner again and make sure it is tight. Plug the air conditioner in and turn it to the temperature you desire.
