How to Install a Window U-Channel

U-channel is a product that takes many forms and has many applications, but it may be most often found trimming windows, doors and other openings that contain rough edges and need to be sealed or protected. U-channels may be used on homemade projects like hand-crafted metal frames, the windows on homemade screen doors and any projects involving glass with a sharp, unprotected edge. In the case of a window opening with rough metallic edges, the U-channel protects anyone who touches the edge of the window, on purpose or inadvertently, from cutting or hurting himself. It also provides a more finished and professional edge to a home-cut window opening.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the sides, top and bottom of the window and add the lengths to determine the window's perimeter. Add several inches to this total, and this is how much U-channel you should buy. Measure the thickness of the opening. This is how thick your U-channel should be.

    • 2

Press the tip of the U-channel into edge of the window opening, starting from any point on the window opening. Press the sides of the U-channel over the sides of the window or opening. Do this until both sides of the U-channel are gripping the edge of the window.

    • 3

Push down the U-channel around the length of the window opening so that it lines the perimeter. Do this until the U-channel comes full circle.

    • 4

Overlap the end of the U-channel with the beginning. The U-channel need not overlap more than 1/4 inch.

    • 5

Snip the end of the U-channel off to remove the excess.
