Sprinkler systems are very useful for covering a large amount of grass with water, but the type of sprinkler head you choose is equally important. Some sprinkler systems have impact or rotor heads installed, but a pop-up sprinkler might be more appropriate. A pop-up sprinkler uses water pressure to push the nozzle above the ground, and uses less water than most other kinds of sprayers. A pop-up sprinkler is best used on small or medium-size lawns. Replacing an impact or rotor head sprinkler with a pop-up can improve the overall performance of your sprinklers, and help to save water.

1
Locate the sprinkler that you want to change to a pop-up sprinkler.
-
2
Dig an area about 1 foot in diameter around the sprinkler head, digging down no more than 6 inches deep.
-
-
3
Grab the exposed sprinkler with your hand, and turn it to the left until it pulls free. The sprinkler is attached to a plastic riser below the unit.
-
4
Wrap the exposed ends of the sprinkler riser with a single layer of Teflon tape. The tape lubricates the pipe threads and ensures a watertight connection.
-
5
Place the pop-up sprinkler head on the riser, and turn it to the right until tight.
-
6
Replace the dirt around the base of the new sprinkler, and run the system to check for performance.
