How to Make a Headboard With a Crib

Sometimes, instead of buying a new headboard, you can use creativity to use something like a child’s crib to fashion one. Children’s cribs usually have tall slats for the headboard and baseboard sections as well as side rails. Cribs come in many forms, but very often, they are wood or painted wood. If the color is not suited to the coloring of your bed, you can change it. This is also a good idea for transitioning from a crib to a bed for a child so there is continuity in their sleep environment.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the portion of the crib that is the width of the mattress you are using. For instance, if you are planning to use the ends of the crib as the headboard, but your mattress is a queen, you might use the ends, side by side. However, if you are using the crib as a headboard for a full mattress, maybe one of the side railings would be the proper length.

Disassemble the crib using a drill or screwdriver.

    • 3

Check the placement of the crib section or sections against the head of the bead to determine if you like how the frame looks with the bed. Simply lean it against the wall or have a helper hold it in position.

    • 4

Take the frame outside and remove any hardware that is not necessary when you use the frame as a headboard. Clean the surface of the wood with soapy water and a rag to remove any residual oils or dirt.

    • 5

Dry the headboard framework. Sand the wood lightly with medium 120-grit sandpaper. Spray paint the wood with the new color using glossy enamel paint. Dry according to the manufacturer’s direction.

Position the headboard at the head of the bed. Choose whether to secure the frame to the wall with a couple of wood screws or to the bed frame after drilling a few pilot holes. If you install the headboard to the wall, use a stud finder to find the placements of the studs and sink the screws into the studs for solid support.
