How to Fix a Pop-Up Sprinkler's Popup

The main components of a pop-up sprinkler consists of a body, a riser, a spring and nozzle. The spring actually retracts the supply tube and nozzle, while water pressure raises the parts above the surface. There are a few reasons why a sprinkler head might not pop up, including that your water pressure has dropped or there is a problem elsewhere in your sprinkler system. Each problem has a specific solution that can save you a call to a plumber.

Instructions

  1. Check the Valves

    • 1

Open the lid to the irrigation control box, which contains the valves for each sprinkler zone.

    • 2

Check each valve to make sure the manual control handles are fully in the "On" position. These handles can get stuck in the "Off" position or not be turned fully to the "On" position, reducing the flow of water to each zone.

    • 3

Turn the solenoids on top of each valve clockwise until tight to make sure the connections are snug.

    Remove Dirt from Sprinkler Heads

    • 4

Turn on a valve that has sprinklers that will not pop up. You can run the zone manually or by setting the sprinkler timer to the "Run" position with the zone selected.

    • 5

Identify sprinkler heads that won't pop up.

    • 6

Step gently on the heads that won't pop up several times. Dirt can get lodged between the riser and the body of the sprinkler. Stepping on the heads will loosen the dirt and remove the jam.
