How to Make Drapery With Clips

A modern, uncomplicated drapery style can be created with clips attached to drapery rings. The clips eliminate rod channels, grommets and pinch pleat stitching, delivering a smooth drapery that can accommodate a window of any size. A canvas or sailcloth drape will be complemented by sleek silver clips and rings. By matching the clip and ring color with the drapery fabric, you will gain a coordinated appearance. The clips can also be used when making shower curtains.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and width of the window with a tape measure. Add 1 inch each for top and side hems and 2 inches for the bottom edge hem. Increase the width measurement by half (multiply by 1.5) for a drape that opens on the side, and by half plus 2 inches for two drapes that open in the center. Use the measurements to determine the amount of fabric needed.

    • 2

Cut the fabric to the measurements with scissors. Turn all fabric edges except the bottom edge to the wrong side 1/2 inch twice and secure in place with straight pins. Sew the top and side hems with a straight stitch, using a sewing machine or needle and thread.

    • 3

Turn the bottom edge of the panel under 1/2 inch and then 1 1/2 inch and secure with straight pins. Sew a blind hem stitch to secure the bottom edge hem, using a sewing machine or a needle and thread.

Attach the clips to the top edge of the drapery by pressing the clips open with your fingers. The clips will be positioned 6 inches apart, with the first clip positioned 1/2 inch from the top edge corners.

    • 5

Slide the rings over a decorative rod and mount the rod on installed rod brackets. Ring clips must be sized to slip easily over the chosen decorative rod.
