Water new sod twice a day for the first week. Run a sprinkler system or water the sod with a garden hose. Spray 1/2 inch of water over the sod. Place small cans in different areas of the lawn and measure the water in the cans to ensure the sod receives a 1/2 inch during each watering session.

Reduce the watering sessions to once a day after the first week. Increase the amount of water to 1 inch. After two weeks, water the sod three to four times a week, depending on rainfall and temperatures. After four weeks reduce watering to once a week to allow roots from the sod to form within the soil.

Mow the sod after it has reached 4 to 5 inches in growth or three to four weeks from installation.
