How to Grow Nippon Daisies

Nippon daisies (Nipponanthemum nipponicum) produce white flowers with yellow centers similar to other types of daisies. They are perennials that grow year to year in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 5 to 9. Since nippon daisies are leggy at the bottom, consider planting smaller flowering plants in front for a more attractive display, recommends Missouri Botanical Gardens. A simple way to grow nippon daisies is to transplant nursery plants after the last frost in the spring.

Things You'll Need

  • Tiller or hoe
  • Organic matter
  • Trowel
  • Garden hose
  • Garden clippers

Instructions

    • 1

Grow nippon daisies in an area of the garden where they will receive six or more hours of sunlight. In hot climates, some afternoon shade or dappled sunlight is OK.

    • 2

Improve the soil by incorporating 3 to 4 inches of organic matter -- such as compost, peat or leaf mold -- into the soil bed at a depth of approximately 8 to 12 inches.

    • 3

Plant nippon daisies 24 inches apart and as deep as they were planted in their nursery containers.

    • 4

Water nippon daisies with 1 inch of water weekly for the first month. Afterward, water them weekly when rain is in short supply.

    • 5

Trim 2 to 4 inches off in the spring before flowering to encourage more compact growth and pinch off dead blooms to encourage more flowers.
