How to Rid Your House of Odor From Burned Food

We've all had the experience of accidentally burning food while cooking, then having the strong, unpleasant smell fill the house. Spraying commercial air freshener will only add an over-layer of artificial scent to the burned odor. However, you don't have to leave the house to escape the smell. You can use household products to naturally remove the lingering burned smell, and restore clean air to your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Open all windows and screen doors in the vicinity of the kitchen. This is the fastest, easiest way to let fresh air in and remove the burned smell. Turn on any ceiling fans, or use a portable fan to further blow the smoky air outside.

    • 2

Pour 2 cups of white vinegar into a tea pot or pan, bring it to a boil and then let it simmer for at least 15 minutes. Vinegar is very effective at neutralizing strong smells.

    • 3

Fill 2 or 3 bowls 3/4 full of white vinegar, and place the bowls in the rooms with the strongest smell. This will further absorb the smoky scent.

    • 4

If smell still lingers in the kitchen, put 1/2 cup of baking soda in a cup or bowl, and let it sit to absorb odor.

    • 5

Once the burned smell is mostly gone, boil equal parts water and lemon juice, or a cup of water with 1 tsp. each of spices such as cloves, cinnamon or nutmeg to pleasantly scent your home and eliminate the last of the smoky odor.
