How to Get Rid of Mold Damage in Your House

Mold can grow in a home when it has enough humidity, moisture and a food source, like drywall. Mold often releases toxic spores that aggravate allergies and cause respiratory issues while also damaging structural components of a home. It is extremely important to remove mold damage fully and properly, or the mold can return. Mold damage removal can be easy, depending on the material that is damaged.

Instructions

    • 1

Discard any delicate items that are infested with mold in a sealed garbage bag. These items include waterlogged cardboard boxes, books and paper, or other items that you cannot clean effectively without destroying them. If your homeowners' insurance covers mold damage, you may be able to claim these items.

    • 2

Scrub hard surfaces with a mild detergent, like laundry detergent, to remove any mold. Mold does not usually damage these surfaces, but it should be scrubbed off so it doesn't spread. If the surface is thoroughly waterlogged, as is the case with drywall in a flooded room, water-damaged portions may need to be cut out and replaced.

    • 3

Vacuum any soft surfaces that are not washable, like upholstered furniture or mattresses. If this does not remove mold damage or stains, these items may have to be discarded or the mold will return.

    • 4

Wash any linens, clothes or other soft materials that have been damaged by mold in the washing machine at the highest temperature possible. This will kill the mold and remove stains.

    • 5

Leave a dehumidifier in the affected room overnight to fully dry out the area to prevent mold from returning.
