How to Make Fiberglass Life-Size Animals

Materials Needed

* Fiberglass resin

* Fiberglass cloth

* Polyester resin

* Polyester hardener

* Gelcoat

* Paints and brushes

* Wood or metal armature

* Sculpting tools

* Safety gear (gloves, goggles, respirator)

Step 1: Sculpting the Armature

* First, you will need to create an armature, or framework, for your fiberglass animal. This can be made of wood, metal, or even cardboard. The armature should be strong and sturdy enough to support the weight of the fiberglass.

Step 2: Applying the Fiberglass Cloth

* Cut fiberglass cloth into small pieces.

* Mix the fiberglass resin and hardener according to the package instructions.

* Apply a layer of fiberglass resin to the armature using a brush.

* Press the fiberglass cloth pieces into the resin.

* Continue adding layers of fiberglass cloth and resin until the desired thickness is achieved.

Step 3: Sanding and Smoothing

* Once the fiberglass is cured, you will need to sand and smooth the surface. This can be done using a variety of sanding tools, such as a sander, sandpaper, or a grinding tool.

Step 4: Applying the Gelcoat

* Gelcoat is a pigmented resin that is used to give the fiberglass a smooth, glossy finish.

* Mix the gelcoat according to the package instructions.

* Apply the gelcoat using a brush or a roller.

* Allow the gelcoat to cure according to the package instructions.

Step 5: Painting

* Once the gelcoat is cured, you can paint your fiberglass animal. Use acrylic or oil-based paints, and be sure to let each coat dry completely before applying the next.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

* Add any final details to your fiberglass animal, such as glass eyes or faux fur.

* Seal the paint with a clear coat to protect it from the elements.
