Unplug the vacuum to avoid electric shock or a short in the vacuum cleaner's electrical system while servicing the cleaner.
Replace the existing vacuum cleaner bag with an approved bag for the make and model of your cleaner. The process for replacing the bag varies by model. Consult the vacuum's owner's manual for bag replacement instructions for your specific model. Inspect the opening that connects the suction conduit with the bag. Remove any dust or hair that may be obstructing airflow into the bag.
Replace the vacuum's filters. Bagless vacuums and some vacuum cleaners with bags have filters. Replace the filters to ensure a high level of airflow and strong suction. Consult your vacuum cleaner's owner's manual for filter removal, installation, cleaning and replacement procedures. If your vacuum cleaner uses washable filters, be sure to allow the filters to dry completely before replacing them.
Turn the vacuum cleaner over so the underside of the cleaning head is facing upward. Remove the screws or clips on the bottom plate and remove the plate from the cleaning head.
Inspect the belt, looking for cracks or tears in the belt, or worn edges that are likely to progress into tears or a break.
Pull the brush roller from the slots on either side of the cleaning head. Remove the belt from the brush roller vacuum's motor drive shaft.
Inspect the intake inside the cleaning head. Remove any matter that may have gathered inside the shaft.
Place the new belt onto the brush roll as well as around the vacuum cleaner's motor drive shaft. Place the side of the brush roll opposite the belt back into the slot inside the cleaning head of the vacuum. Slide the side of the brush roll closest to the belt into the slot in the cleaning head. Rotate the brush roll to ensure fluid spinning to signify a successful belt replacement.
Place the bottom plate back on the cleaning head and replace the screws or engage the clips to secure the plate in place.
Return the vacuum to the upright position and plug the power cord into the wall outlet. Turn the vacuum on to test your servicing. Make sure the brush roll spins and the bag inflates when the vacuum is on.
