How to Troubleshoot a Breckwell Pellet Stove Combustion Blower That Is Not Working

Pellet stoves generally are more efficient than fireplace inserts and are cost-effective to operate, because they are fueled by small pellets formed of sawdust and wood shavings. Breckwell is a well-known pellet stove manufacturer. If your Breckwell pellet stove does not operate properly, the combustion blower may be at fault. The combustion blower performs two functions: It delivers air to the burn pot so the pellets can burn, and it blows out exhaust. Troubleshooting the combustion blower may restore your pellet stove to proper function.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the stove's control panel. Breckwell pellet stoves built in 2001 or later have a panel that displays error codes when the stove isn't working properly. An "AS" or "#2" blinking error indicates an airflow problem that probably is related to poor maintenance or cleaning. A "POF" or "#3" error usually indicates an issue with the damper, and isn't related to the combustion blower.

Disconnect the pellet stove's power and clean the stove thoroughly as described in your owner's manual; the method varies somewhat from model-to-model. Wipe any dust and debris off the blades of the combustion blower's fan during the cleaning process. According to Breckwell, this cleaning process usually is enough to restore a pellet stove to normal function.

Replace the blower's combustion blower gasket if the blower still does not function properly. Breckwell recommends annual replacement of the blower gasket when you clean the blower at the start of each burning season. Once the blower is unscrewed from the steel exhaust tube, a new gasket slides over the blower flange to sit between the flange and the exhaust tube.

Replace the blower thermodisc if the blower turns on normally but then shuts off after 10 or 15 minutes. The thermodisc is intended to close when its temperature reaches about 110 degrees Fahrenheit; failure to do so negatively affects the blower performance. Follow the instructions for your specific model to replace the thermodisc, or seek professional replacement.
