How to Decorate Cylinder Vases

Straight cylinder vases are very desirable for many home decor styles, as curved vases create an obstacle for adding decorations that are not flexible. The clean vertical lines of a cylinder vase offer a smooth surface for applying decorative embellishments. Decorate cylinder vases to display an arrangement of flowers, or add a candle for use as a hurricane lantern. Temporary elements that can be removed and changed with the seasons make the vases versatile, while decorations that are permanently applied create a long-lasting home decor accessory.

Instructions

  1. Decoupaged Hurricane Vase

    • 1

Cut a sheet of white tissue paper into 1-inch squares.

    • 2

Apply decoupage medium to a 4-inch section on the outside of a cylinder vase using a sponge brush. Place a tissue paper square in the wet medium. Apply decoupage medium over the square. Apply additional squares to the vase, overlapping and expanding the area until the outside of the vase is completely covered. Allow the medium to dry.

    • 3

Mix acrylic paint of your choice with water until the mixture is an inky consistency. Paint the mixture over the decoupaged tissue paper using a sponge brush. The watered-down paint mixture will stain the surface. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 4

Trace and cut out shapes of your choice from card stock using cookie cutters, clip art or coloring books as your patterns. Personal die cut machines or purchased die cut shapes can also be used.

    • 5

Apply decoupage medium to the surface of the vase. Arrange the card stock shapes on the wet vase. Press the shapes with your fingers to smooth out bubbles and wrinkles.

    • 6

Apply a layer of decoupage medium to the entire surface of the vase to finish and seal the shapes.

    Twig-Embellished Cylinder Vase

    • 7

Gather an assortment of straight sticks from your backyard that are approximately the diameter of a pencil. Cut the sticks to 6 inches long using hand-held yard clippers.

    • 8

Place two rubber bands on the cylinder vase. Slide one rubber band approximately 2 inches from the bottom of the vase and the other rubber band approximately 2 inches from the top.

    • 9

Slip the twigs vertically under the rubber bands. Place the twigs side-by-side, completely surrounding the circumference of the base. Center the length of the twigs between the top and bottom edges of the vase. Adjust the ends of the sticks so they are even with each other.

    • 10

Measure around the circumference of the vase using a measuring tape. Cut two pieces of twine using this measurement plus 8 inches.

    • 11

Wrap one length of twine around the vase, and position 1 inch above the bottom edge of the twigs. Tie the ends in a knot to secure. Trim the ends of the twine to 1 inch long. Wrap the remaining twine length around the vase, and position 1 inch below the top edge of the twigs. Knot and trim the ends. Cut off the rubber bands.
