Choose a container. Take into consideration the decor of the room and whether you want an informal or formal look. A vase adds a touch of elegance to the arrangement, while a watering can lends to a more relaxed atmosphere.
Clean the container. Pour 1 tsp. dishwashing liquid into the container, and fill it with hot water. Using a bottle brush or a sponge, scrub the interior of the container until you cannot see any debris, approximately one minute. Rinse the container thoroughly.
Use shears to remove all leaves or thorns that would lie below the water line when you place the flowers into the container.
Cut 1 inch from each stem, and place it into a gallon bucket filled half-way with water as hot as your hand can stand -- 100 to 110 degrees F.
Fill the vase or watering can with fresh water; cut each stem at an angle, and arrange it into the receptacle.
Place the arrangement away from any heat sources, such as hot air ducts or
radiators.
Check the water daily. Replenish the water if it is decreasing. Rearrange the flowers after you replenish the water, and remove at least 1 inch from each stem.
