How to Decorate With Mums

Mums, also known as chrysanthemums, have lush, showy blooms ideal for home decorating. Hardy mums are often the stars of autumn gardens, but they also make charming container plants. The flowers are available in a wide range of warm, autumnal colors, such as orange, creamy white, red and gold, so work them into your fall decor display as a fresh, vibrant touch. Mums look right at home next to pumpkins, pinecones and other natural items.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill an 18-inch vase with cool water. Choose a vintage milk glass, rustic-looking wooden or traditional crystal vase, depending on your preference.

    • 2

Gather two orange, two red, two gold and two cream-colored mums. Use floral clippers to cut the fresh flower stems at varying lengths of 20, 21 and 22 inches to create an interesting display. Cut the mums' stems at slight angles for maximum water absorption. Insert the flowers into the vase.

    • 3

Place the vase of mums in the middle of a dining room table, coffee table, nightstand, fireplace mantel or any other space you're decorating as a focal point.

    • 4

Incorporate additional fall-inspired decor elements into the mum display. Carve out the centers of white and orange mini pumpkins and place tea-light candles inside. Set one pumpkin on each side of the vase as one idea. Set glass bowls filled with pinecones or acorns on either side of the vase as another option.
