How to: Kitchen Booth

Creating a booth space in the kitchen will let you not only make the most of every square foot in the kitchen, but also get better use out of the space. If your apartment or home doesn’t have the room elsewhere, turn an area in the kitchen into a little eating booth, a cozy reading booth or a small study booth. This project can be finished in less than a day and without a costly remodel.

Start by assessing the available space. Engaging in well-thought-out space planning before yo begin redecorating eliminates problems later. Determine where in the kitchen you want the booth area. Perhaps you want it away from a door to avoid cold, wintry air, or you want it in front of the door to block its use. Maybe the kitchen has a window you want in the booth area, or you want to locate it on the less noisy side of the kitchen away from a window.

Next, create separation. Divide kitchen space from booth space visually or physically. The visual method works well in a smaller kitchen with not a lot of room for extra furniture. Hang a sheer, ceiling-mounted curtain between the areas, or just paint them two different colors to show separation. To physically separate the booth, use an opaque curtain, temporary wall, room divider or folding screen. If there is sufficient room in the kitchen, use a bookcase or something similar.

Lastly, bring in the furniture. In addition to what you plan to use the booth for, also consider scale when you’re selecting your furnishings, and avoid pieces that are too large and will swallow up all the space. Instead of a chaise or armchair in your reading booth, use a comfy, cushioned rocking chair, along with a small accent table. Instead of a big table and chairs for an eating booth, use a bistro set.
