Do space planning. Survey and measure the available space, and think about which corner in the kitchen you want for the booth. Perhaps you would like the window included in the booth area, or allow for entry and exit through a doorway or you want it on the quieter side of the kitchen away from the living room. Consider all relevant factors before starting any redecorating.

Separate the booth. This is done either physically or visually. A room divider physically blocks the booth’s corner. Options include using a folding screen, installing a ceiling-mounted track with an opaque hanging curtain, putting up a temporary wall or using a piece of furniture such as a bookcase. To visually separate the booth, use a sheer hanging curtain or just paint the kitchen and the booth area in different but complementary colors.

Furnish the booth. When selecting furniture, consider both function and scale. If the booth is small, don’t use pieces that are too big. For an eat-in area, get a small bistro set instead of a large table and chairs. For an office or study space, use a space-saving corner desk instead of a traditional desk. For a reading booth, use an accent table and cushioned rocking chair instead of a large armchair.
