How to Build a Kitchen Booth Seat

Having adequate seating in the kitchen is a problem for many homeowners who entertain regularly. It can also be a problem in small homes where there is limited space for kitchen chairs. Building a kitchen booth seat is a simple -- and often inexpensive -- solution to both of these problems.

  • 1-inch hardwood
  • Circular saw
  • 2-inch wood screws

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space where you intend to install your kitchen booth seat using a measuring tape. Measure out from the wall to determine the length of your booth seat and up from the floor to decide on the seat height.

    • 2

Use a kitchen chair for reference in determining the height and depth of your booth seat. You will be constructing a rectangular frame for the booth seat and attaching a solid, vertical sheet of hardwood for the booth seat back. The booth seat back should be at least 24 inches taller than the booth seat.

    • 3

Cut two pieces of 1-inch hardwood to the length and height dimensions of your booth seat using a circular saw. Use the depth and height dimensions to cut two more pieces of 1-inch hardwood. For both sets of boards, use the height of the booth seat, not the booth back.

    • 4

Arrange the four pieces of 1-inch hardwood in a retangular shape, standing the boards upright on their longest narrow edges. Sandwich the two shorter boards between the ends of the longer two. Drive 2-inch wood screws through the longer boards into the thickness of the shorter ones to secure the frame.

    • 5

Cut a solid sheet of 1-inch hardwood to the length of the booth seat and the total height of the booth using the circular saw. The total height of the booth is the desired height of the booth seat back, measured up from the floor. This board is the booth seat back.

    • 6

Stand the booth seat back upright on its 1-inch edge and position it flush against the longest side of the rectangular frame you just constructed. Align the outside edges of the frame with the edges of the booth seat back.

    • 7

Drive 1-1/2-inch wood screws through the inside of the rectangular frame into the booth seat back to attach it. Insert screws every six inches along all four edges of the rectangular frame.

    • 8

Cut a sheet of 1-inch hardwood to the length and depth dimensions of the booth seat using the circular saw. Lay the cut board flat on top of the rectangular frame and align the edges. Drive 1-1/2-inch wood screws down through the board into the thickness of the frame to secure it.

    • 9

Paint or stain your completed kitchen booth seat to match the existing decor in your kitchen. Add a coat of clear varnish or polyurethane to protect the surface of the wood from minor wear and water damage.

    • 10

Cover the booth seat with upholstered cushions or throw pillows to make the seating more comfortable.
