Trellis Lace Stitching

Trellis lace stitching is a style of crochet that produces a geometric lacy fabric. Depending on the yarn or thread used, the fabric can be made into a fine tablecloth or a lacy shawl or scarf. Using worsted-weight or bulky-weight yarn and a large hook, the trellis lace stitch is used to make decorative throws, afghans or bedspreads. Finer crochet yarns or threads and small steel hooks are typically used to create lace tablecloths or table runners.
  1. Appearance

    • Crocheted "trellis lace" may be used to describe a number of stitch patterns, however the patterns share common characteristics. Like a gardening trellis, the pattern has regularly spaced holes in a repeating geometric design. Stitch clusters between the holes are typically a triangular or diamond shape. Depending on the pattern, yarn and hook used, the resulting fabric may be dense or lacy.

    Stitches

    • Stitches commonly used to create trellis lace include the chain stitch, single crochet, double crochet, treble crochet and the slip stitch. To create the geometric clusters and spaces, multiple stitches are crocheted in the same stitch from the previous row. Careful stitch counting is required.

    Skill Level

    • Trellis lace is a stitch pattern well-suited to novice crocheters who have mastered the basic stitches. For a uniform appearance, consistent stitch tension is required. Basic trellis lace patterns have only one repeating row of stitches. No stitch increases or decreases are used in a rectangular pattern.

    Stitch Pattern

    • To crochet the trellis lace, crochet a multiple of six chains, plus five. Do one treble stitch in the fifth chain from the hook. Skip five chains. Make a cluster of one treble, one chain (three times) and then one more treble in the next stitch. End the first and each consecutive row with one treble, one chain, one treble. Chain five, then turn at the end of each row. Do one treble stitch in the first chain-one space to begin the second row. Crochet a cluster in the top space of each cluster from the preceding row. Repeat the second row to the desired length of the project.
