Lace Edging

Lace edging is traditionally used on the edges of sewn items to cleanly finish them. Double-edge lace, where both sides are decorative, is most often used on the exterior of items in an ornamental manner. One-sided lace edging, where one side is decorative and the other side is flat, most often has the flat side inserted into a hem or seam. Lace edging comes in a variety of colors, widths and lace patterns and is made with a variety of materials.
  1. Hem Finishing

    • Use one-sided lace edging, or lace seam binding, on stretch fabrics or other garments on which you want a neat, clean finish. Apply the lace to the raw hem to finish the edges of the hem. For narrow or curved hems, used narrow stretch lace seam binding. For normal hems on stretch fabrics, use medium-size stretch lace seam binding. For woven fabric hems, use non-stretch lace seam binding in any size of your choice.

    Seam Camouflage

    • Use lace edge to camouflage unsightly seams on garments or home decor items. Place the lace over the seam and pin and sew it into place to hide the seam. Instead of an unattractive seam on your item, a line of lace will take its place.

    Decorative Trim -- Direct Application

    • Lace edging comes in many different sizes, colors and fabrics. Use lace edging as decorative trim on clothing, undergarments or home decor items. Apply double-sided lace edging directly to your sewn items by pinning the edging on the item and sewing each edge on with a 1/8-inch seam allowance. If you are applying lace to the very edge of your fabric and want a portion of the lace to hang over the edge, place the lace so that a portion is over the edge and pin the side still on the fabric in place. Sew this side onto the fabric with a 1/8-inch seam allowance. When applying lace edging, pin it onto the item without stretching the lace, or your fabric will pucker.

    Decorative Trim -- Insertion Application

    • With home decor items and hemmed edges, you may want a portion of your lace to peek out from a sewn seam. For this method of application, place the item you are sewing with the right sides together and ensure the seam where you want your lace is lined up. Place your lace edge between the two layers of fabric and line up one long edge of the lace edging with the side seams of your fabric. Pin the fabric and lace together and sew with a seam allowance that is considerably smaller than the width of your lace. When you turn your item right-side-out, your lace peeks out from the seam.
