How to Decorate a Multi-Themed Kids Room

Decorating a multi-themed room for a child at first might seem difficult. However, whether you are decorating for one child's different tastes or incorporating two children's interests into one room, it can be done. Painting the walls neutral colors such as gray, beige or taupe, and letting accessories such as your child's artwork or bright pillows stand out, will help you to create a multi-themed kids room that will delight your little one.

Determine your budget before you begin and make a plan. A multi-themed room might seem like double the budget, but using existing furniture and doing your homework before shopping to find the best deals will save you lots of money. For example, if your child's room already has good furniture such as night stands, chairs or dressers, refinish or re-cover them to fit the new themes of the room. Check the sales online or in ads to comparison shop.

Involve the kids. Talk with them and encourage them to pick out a few items that will help to express their individual style. These items might include items such as lamps, posters, chalk boards or even bedding. It is acceptable if these items don't match; use these pieces to help create a plan that will involve the child's special picks in an organized fashion. For example, if the child chooses a turtle lamp, you then can use the color green when purchasing bedding.

Find the common ground if two children share a room. Pick a neutral tone for the wall color as this will help to create the look of one room despite the different themes. That way, if one child wants hockey posters and the other wants airplane models, it won't look so conflicting due to the way the neutral tone brings together the room. Use an accent wall as a compromise if the child wants a certain color on the wall. For example, paint the main focus wall of the room pink with beige flowers, and then the other walls can be beige. Add accessories, such as toss pillows, that bring out color but do not overwhelm the room.

Keep the room organized and free of clutter. Kids need shelving and storage space to stay organized; invest in pieces that can last a long time and will be able to change over time as the children grow up. For example, buy a plain white bookcase rather than a flower-patterned one. Shelves and storage bins should be neutral colors as they should not be the main focal point of the room. If there is more than one child in the room, items such as bookcases or desks can make a good divider between the two themes.
