How to Install an Air Filter Over the Air Grid on a Ceiling

Virtually all HVAC -- heating, ventilation and air conditioning -- systems for residential use operate with ductwork to move warm or cool air through the building. The return vent draws air into a duct that takes it back to the heating/cooling unit to gain or lose heat and then get circulated through the house again. A filter installed over the opening in the duct removes dust and other particles so the air is cleaner. The filter fits behind a metal grid, typically attached to the wall or ceiling. If you have a ceiling-mounted grid, use a ladder and ask a friend to spot you for safety while changing the filter.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the furnace or heat pump at the wall thermostat.

    • 2

Position the ladder or stepstool below the air grid. Ask a friend to hold the ladder steady while you work.

    • 3

Twist the two screws on one edge of the air grid counterclockwise a half-turn to release the grid from the ceiling. The grid will swing downward on hinges. If your air grid has four screws, remove all of them and hand the grid to your assistant.

    • 4

Pull out the old filter by one of the corners and place the filter in a trash bag to minimize mess.

    • 5

Insert the new filter into the opening and secure the air grid over the filter with the screws.

    • 6

Switch on the furnace or heat pump.
