Remove the cover on your cold air return. The cold air return cover is typically made of metal. It has slotted vents to allow air to flow through it. The cold air return vent will be located on the ceiling or on the wall. Make sure that you temporarily shut off the heat and air system. Use the thermostat to shut the system off. Newer air return vents will have retaining clips holding the vent in place. Older vents will have 4 screws. There will be a screw in each corner. Remove the screws or turn the retaining clips to remove the vent cover.

Remove the filter from behind the cold air return vent. When you remove the vent, the filter will be behind it. Throw the old filter away. Vacuum the vent. The metal air filter cover is a dirt catcher. It is important to keep the vent clean to avoid any restrictions to air flow.

Install the new air filter. Place the new filter in the exact same place from where you removed the old one. Located on the side of the filter is an arrow. The arrow must be pointing into the house or towards you. An improperly installed air filter will not effectively catch dust, dirt, and pollutants.

Replace the vent cover. Place the vent back over the filter. Turn the retaining clips or reinstall the screws. Turn the heat and air system back on.
