How to Make a Bean Pole Tent

A bean pole tent converts your backyard garden into an edible hideout. Pole beans are easy for children and beginning gardeners to grow. Additionally, pole beans can be grown in a variety of climates and do not require much maintenance. Varieties such as Blue Lake, Kentucky Blue and Kentucky Wonder can be harvested in about 65 days. Your bean pole tent should be constructed after any danger of frost has passed in an area that receives full sunlight.

Instructions

    • 1

Stick five freshly cut branches, 1 inch in diameter and 10 feet in length, into the ground to form the perimeter of the bean pole tent. Using freshly cut branches allows the poles to bend into the shape of a tent.

    • 2

Lash the exposed ends of the branches together at the top with rope to form the conical shape of a tepee.

    • 3

Tie five to 10 horizontal trellis lines around the circumference of the bean pole tent using garden twine. Secure the twine to each branch with a clove hitch or other knot as you circle the bean pole tent.

    • 4

Plant pole bean seeds at four- to six-inch intervals along the perimeter of the bean pole tent. Keep the seeds moist until they sprout.

    • 5

Replant bean seeds at two week intervals to fill in any spaces and have a continuous supply of beans throughout.

    • 6

Harvest your beans often so the plants continue to produce new flowers.
