How to Replace the String on a Troy-Bilt TB75SS Trimmer

The Troy-Bilt TB75SS is a gas-powered string trimmer, used to trim areas of your lawn inaccessible to a lawn mower. The trimmer can also be turned upside down and used as an edger along the edge of your yard. The TB75SS utilizes two individual strings that rotate quickly to cut weeds and grass. After regular usage, the string will break, at which point more string can be dispensed from the string spool attached to the trimmer. Once the string spool is empty, you must wind more string on the spool, or install a new pre-wound spool.

Instructions

  1. Hand-Winding

    • 1

Cut two pieces of trimmer string, each approximately 10-feet in length.

    • 2

Align the arrows on the inner reel and outer spool by holding the outer spool and turning the inner reel counterclockwise.

    • 3

Pull any of the remaining string out of the trimmer.

    • 4

Insert one end of the new string into the eyelet on the side of the outer spool. Push it through so that it passes through the hole on the bottom of the inner reel.

    • 5

Insert approximate 1/2-inch of line into the locking hole, located on the bottom of the inner reel, beside the hole that the string has passed through.

    • 6

Pull the line from outside of the trimmer tight to lock the string into place.

    • 7

Repeat this process for the other piece of string.

    • 8

Place one hand on the outer spool to hold it steady, then turn the inner reel counterclockwise to wind both pieces of string onto the reel. Continue turning until approximately 4 inches of string remain exposed.

    Pre-wound Reel

    • 9

Locate the bump-knob, which is the piece on the bottom of the reel that is bumped on the ground to release more string.

    • 10

Turn the bump-knob counterclockwise to remove, along with the spring and foam seal below.

    • 11

Remove the inner reel from the bottom of the trimmer.

    • 12

Insert the two pieces of string from the new reel into the eyelets on the outer spool.

    • 13

Place the new reel. Replace the foam seal, spring and bump-knob.

    • 14

Press down on the bump-knob and turn clockwise to lock it into place.

    • 15

Grasp the two lines firmly and pull to release from the inner reel.
