How to Change the String on a Troy-Bilt Weed Trimmer

Troy-Bilt weed trimmers allow you to trim parts of your lawn that you cannot get to with a larger mower, like edges and corners. They use spools of string to make even cuts to the grass. The string wears down over time, though, and will need to be changed as performance decreases. You can replace the string on a Troy-Bilt trimmer by re-winding the existing spool with new string or replacing it with a new, pre-wound spool.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement trimming line or pre-wound spool

Instructions

  1. Re-stringing

    • 1

      Turn the trimmer off.

    • 2

Flip the trimmer over so that you can see the bottom of the cutting attachment.

    • 3

Hold the outer spool in place and unscrew the bump knob on the bottom of the unit counterclockwise. Pull the inner reel free from the outer spool, and the spring free from the inner wheel.

    • 4

Wipe any dirt, grass and other debris off of the pieces with a cloth.

    • 5

Cut 18 feet of new trimming line.

    • 6

Insert one end of the line each into the two holes on the inner reel. Pull the ends all the way through the holes, ensuring that an even amount of line goes through each.

    • 7

Observe the winding direction indicated on the reel, then tightly wind both ends of the line around it in even layers. Do not allow the two lines to become crossed.

    • 8

Run the ends of the line through the two marked holding slots. Place the spring back inside the inner reel.

    • 9

Run the ends of the line through the two eyelets on the outer spool, then press the inner reel and outer spool back together. Hold them in place and pull firmly on the line to free it from the holding slots.

    • 10

      Reattach the bump knob.

    Pre-wound spool

    • 11

Follow Steps 1 through 4 in Section 1.

    • 12

Insert the spring into the new pre-wound inner reel.

    • 13

Follow Steps 9 and 10 in Section 1.
