How to Replace a Trimmer Head on a Troy-Bilt

The trimmer head on a Troy-Bilt lawn trimmer contains the cutting line, spool and the spring, which operates the line advancing system. These parts will either need to be replaced or transferred over to the new head. For the new head to properly fit onto the end of the gearbox and connect properly to the gearbox, the trimmer head should be designed for use with your model of Troy-Bilt trimmer. Other models may not use the correct arbor bolt, which connects them together, so the head will not fit securely to the end of the shaft.

Instructions

Shut the Troy-Bilt engine off and let it cool down before attempting to replace the head. Stand the trimmer on the butt of its engine or lay it flat on a workbench to access the trimmer head.

Unscrew the head's center bump-knob counterclockwise with your fingers. Pull the bump knob off and take the spool cover off the head. Slide out the spool and any remaining cutting line. Lift out the spring underneath the spool. Take out the slide washer.

Unscrew the arbor bolt either clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on model, in the center of the trimmer head using the wrench. Take the entire head off the end of the shaft.

Set the replacement Troy-Bilt trimmer head onto the center of the gearbox. Tighten the arbor bolt using the wrench. Refit the spring, spool and spool cover. Retighten the center bump knob clockwise with your fingers.
