How to Install a John Deere Mower Deck on a 160

The John Deere 180 lawn mower is a standard lawn tractor with a single blade mower deck mounted to brackets under the tractor. The 180 is a base model for John Deere and does not come with some of the frills you'd find on high-end models. As the v-belt ages it will start to slip and the blade will not maintain proper speed. This will decrease the cutting efficiency and possibly cause the grass to lay over instead of cut.

Instructions

    • 1

Place wooden blocks under each side of the 180's mower deck and then lower the deck onto the wooden blocks.

    • 2

Locate the torsion bars that connect the deck to the underside of the John Deere and then pull out the cotter pins. With the pins removed, pull out the lynch pins. Lower the torsion bars out of the way.

    • 3

Slide the mower deck towards the engine and take the belt off the pulley that extends out from under the engine. Slide the belt through the belt guard.

    • 4

Take the blocks out from under the mower deck and then pull the deck out from under the John Deere.

    • 5

Make a mental note or draw a diagram of the pulley system on the top of the mower deck. Remove the belt from the deck and place the new belt onto the deck. It is very important that you route the belt properly. Otherwise, you could reverse the direction of the blade.

    • 6

Slide the deck under the lawn tractor and place it back on the blocks.

    • 7

Slide the deck forward and attach the belt to the front pulley. Once attached, slide the deck backwards and line the torsion bars up with the brackets under the John Deere.

    • 8

Slide the pins in place and then slide the cotter pins in place. Once attached, remove the wooden blocks.
