How to Build Birdhouses & Feeders

Attracting wild birds to your property can be effectively accomplished by using birdhouses and feeders. Traditional birdhouses and feeders can be purchased in garden supply stores and home improvement stores. These, however, can be expensive. If you are interested in attracting birds to your property and do not want to spend the money for a commercially manufactured birdhouse or feeder, you can make your own at home. Making your own birdhouse or feeder is not only inexpensive, but the finished product will be something truly unique.

Instructions

  1. Bird Feeder

    • 1

Sand the edges of your 12-by-12-inch piece of wood using medium grit sandpaper. Paint or stain your piece of wood using an outdoor paint or wood sealer.

    • 2

Place the wood on your work surface. Twist one eye hook into the each of the four corners of the piece of wood.

    • 3

Cut four pieces of 12-inch twine. Tie one end of each piece of twine to one of the four eye hooks.

    • 4

Hang your bird feeder from a tree using the twine. Place birdseed, suet balls or fresh fruit on your bird feeder.

    Birdhouse

    • 5

Rinse the inside of a large metal coffee can using soap and water. Let the can dry completely.

    • 6

Use a craft knife to make a hole in the lid of the coffee can. The hole should be 2 inches in diameter and located 1 inch from the lid's edge. This is the entrance hole for your birdhouse.

    • 7

Make two pilot holes in the side of the coffee can, using your drill. The holes should be evenly spaced on one side of the can and just large enough to insert your eye hooks.

    • 8

Place the lid on the coffee can.

    • 9

Twist your eye hooks into your two drilled holes. Tie a piece of 12-inch twine or fishing line from each eye hook. And hang the finished birdhouse outside.
