How to Install the Upper Belt on Troy Pony Riding Lawnmower

The Troy-Bilt Pony has two drive belts. The first and only serviceable belt on the mower is the upper belt, also known as the mower drive belt. This belt drives the mower blades off the PTO pulley mounted to the underside of the Pony's engine. Replacing the belt requires the removal of the mower deck and it is important to inspect and replace the belt when you see signs of wear, such as dry rotting or cracking.

Instructions

    • 1

Drive the pony onto level ground, and then disengage the PTO via the PTO engagement lever. Lower the mower deck to its lowest position and then turn off the lawn tractor by taking out the ignition key.

    • 2

Remove the screw that holds the keeper rod over the PTO pulley on the bottom of the engine with a screwdriver. Mark the hole on the other end of the pulley mounting bracket where the keeper rod goes in and then remove the keeper rod from the lawn tractor.

    • 3

Remove the deck belt from around the PTO pulley.

    • 4

Remove the cotter pin that secures the front and left side of the deck to the deck support rods. Remove the deck support rods from the deck lift arms.

    • 5

Lift the deck lift lever to its highest position to move the lift arms away from the mower deck.

    • 6

Slide the deck forward and remove it from the stabilizer rod.

    • 7

Remove the cotter pin from the PTO cable mounted to the back of the mower deck and then disconnect the PTO cable. Slide the mower deck out from under the mower deck.

    • 8

Remove the screws that secure the pulley covers onto the mower deck, using a screwdriver and then place the covers off to the side.

    • 9

Make a mental note of the deck's belt routing around all four pulleys and then take off the old belt. Place the new belt onto the pulleys and then reattach the pulley guards.

    • 10

Slide the mower deck under the lawn tractor and reconnect the PTO cable. Secure the cable with the cotter pin.

    • 11

Slide the mower deck onto the stabilizer rod and then lower the lift lever down to its lowest position.

    • 12

Place the deck support arms onto the lift arms and secure them with the cotter pins.

    • 13

Stretch the belt forward and place it onto the PTO pulley. After securing the pulley, place the keeper rod in place and secure it with the screw.
