How to Replace a Belt on a Simplicity Riding Mower

The belt on the Simplicity riding mower transfers power from the engine to the mower deck. When you engage the deck, it cuts your grass. The belt is subject to a great deal of abuse under normal operating conditions, and it will eventually begin to crack and fray before it finally breaks. Since it is the source of power to the mower blade, you will need to replace the belt before you can cut the grass again. But you don't need to take the mower to a repair shop because this is a job that you can do yourself and save money on repair costs.

Park the mower on a level surface where you can work on it. Turn off the key and set the brake. Push the deck lever so that the deck is in its lowest position. Open the engine cover and disconnect the spark plug wire by grasping the boot and pulling the wire from the plug.

Remove the belt guards from the mower deck by taking out the bolts with an adjustable wrench. Push the idler pulley toward the front of the mower to relive the tension on the belt if it is still on. Remove the belt from the pulleys and discard it.

Slip the new belt over the main engine pulley. Make sure the “V” is down against the pulley. Slip the belt around the arbor pulley and loop it onto the deck drive pulley. Release the idler pulley to apply tension to the new belt. Pull the deck lever back to raise the deck into the up position.

Attach the spark plug wire to the plug, pushing firmly until it snaps into place. Sit on the mower and start it. Engage the deck to test the new belt.
