How to Remove the Deck on a Sears Riding Mower

Sears riding lawn mowers use a cutting deck that hangs between the tires to cut grass. This deck is removable, if needed. When the deck is removed, you can do many things. You can replace the deck belt or even race lawn mowers in one of many designated lawn mowers racers located across the country. When removing the deck, you will not need any tools as Sears designed the deck to come off using only your hands.

Instructions

    • 1

Push the clutch located beside the steering wheel into the "Disengaged" position.

    • 2

Position the deck lift adjuster to the lowest cutting deck.

    • 3

Remove the belt from around the engine pulley -- the pulley located underneath the engine.

    • 4

Remove the clutch rod, the only piece connecting the deck to the mower, by unhooking the spring on the rod.

    • 5

Unplug the retainer spring behind the clutch rod and the two retainer springs on the deck's arms.

    • 6

Remove the retainer springs from the hole in the deck. The retainer springs are on the back of the deck.

    • 7

Move the deck lift adjuster to its highest point so you can remove the mower deck.
